CalMatters picks two Citizen journalists for notable fellowship

Two members of The Citizen have been selected for a fellowship with CalMatters, an online nonprofit news organization that covers California policy.

Lylah Schmedel-Permanna, Managing Editor, and Desmond Meagley, Associate Editor, will be one of 12 fellows with the CalMatters College Journalism Network for the 2024-25 school year. They’ll cover statewide higher education issues that impact students.

The Citizen Editor-in-Chief, Li Khan, was a fellow with CalMatters for the 2023-24 school year. She reported on student access to Narcan and STEM programs at community colleges.

Li Khan, Editor in Chief

Li Khan believes in the power of student media to hold local institutions accountable. She's followed up on California laws that put Narcan in the hands of college students and improved access to healthcare for part-time community college faculty. She's a member of the CalMatters College Journalism Network, where she analyzes how changes to higher education policy trickle down from the Capitol to colleges and their constituents. Li holds a degree in Computer Science from The University of Texas at Dallas and hopes to incorporate that knowledge into data-centered reporting projects.
