If you live in Castlemont, Coliseum, or a nearby area of East Oakland, you should be paying attention to the Peralta Community College District (PCCD) Area 2 Trustee election.
PCCD is a publicly funded school district which spans four East Bay community colleges: Berkeley City College, Laney College, Merritt College, and the College of Alameda. The Board of Trustees oversees how PCCD utilizes its taxpayer money.
Currently Area 2 is the only seat up for reelection. Read more about what we know about the candidates here.
The Citizen is holding public forums for the Area 2 candidates on Monday, Sep. 23.
The 45-minute forums will be an opportunity for candidates to introduce themselves to the public and share their policy objectives with the Peralta community. Candidates will answer questions crafted by student members of The Citizen.
Both incumbent Paulina Gonzalez-Brito and challenger Sinead Geneva Anderson have confirmed their participation in the forums.
After the forums, The Citizen’s newsroom will democratically endorse a candidate and publish an editorial based on our decision.
Recordings of the forums will be also posted on our website for public viewing.

Not sure whether you live in Area 2? Alameda County residents can find their local districts by entering an address into this online tool.
Alternatively, look for your residence address on this map of the Peralta district trustee areas:
Correction 9/22/24 5:58 p.m.: An earlier version of this article incorrectly implied Fruitvale is part of Area 2. While Fruitvale is in East Oakland, the neighborhood is split between Area 1 (Bill Withrow) and Area 3 (Louis Quindlen)
