Peralta Community College District (PCCD) Student Health Center at Laney College is now open with new health care provider Baywell Health, bringing 50 years of experience in Oakland community health care services to the Laney campus.
Services at the Laney clinic are funded by the Student Health Fee, meaning the clinic is accessible to all PCCD students at no extra cost.
Associate Vice Chancellor of Educational Services Tina Vasconcellos oversaw the selection process that resulted in the partnership with Baywell.
“They’re exciting partners for me,” Vasconcellos said. “They’re really into the community.”
Services include in-person and virtual primary care, family planning services, physical exams, pregnancy testing, birth control, anonymous STI/HIV testing and referrals to mental health services.
The Laney clinic is equipped with an electronic medical record system, according to Baywell’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Angelique Green. The system allows staff to look up a patient’s treatment history and verify their insurance coverage.
Green recounted a visit from a student who was certain that they did not have health insurance.
“We were able to login, register our patient, and then discover that, ‘Guess what? You have health insurance,’” Green recalled.
Cosmetology student David Anderson was unaware of the services offered at the clinic.
“I usually get my healthcare in Richmond, but yeah, I’m definitely gonna check it out,” Anderson said.
Vasconcellos expressed optimism about the Baywell team’s ability to connect with students like Anderson.
“What’s really cool about Baywell is they have teams for everything, so they have an outreach team that’s engaging with our folks,” Vasconcellos said. Baywell’s plan for student outreach includes tabling at campus events and one-on-one student engagement.
Green, like Vasconcellos, believes the Baywell staff’s experience serving Oakland’s diverse population gives her team valuable insight into student outreach.
“We share a lot in terms of the mission between the two organizations, and that is to serve a diverse population and make sure that there’s health equity for all our students, all our patients,” Green said.
The clinic is located in the Student Center, 4th Floor, Room 410. It is open from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, with extended hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. starting Nov. 4. More information can be found at https://laney.edu/health_center/medical-services/.
