The Laney College community is reacting with mixed emotions and some strong commentary to the outcome of the 2024 presidential election.
The Citizen interviewed those on campus in the weeks after the election, to gather the reactions to Trump’s second term.
Engineering student Joanna Albizores delivered her views on the whole ordeal, explaining how she felt disappointed that the candidate she supported, Kamala Harris, did not win.
“You know, for a month, everyone, at least a lot of people that I associated myself with, had a lot of hopes with the outcome of what could have been Kamala Harris,” Albizores explained.
Albizores added that she was concerned for the future of reproductive rights and other issues that could affect her family members or friends.
“I know that we deeply care about it, it’s just overall depressing,” Albizores said.
Anaya Mckissick, who told The Citizen that she is not a student at Laney College, described her discontentment with both parties. Mckissick said she was still in shock about the election results.
“I was just in disbelief,” Mckissick said. “Well, I knew it was gonna happen, but I was still in disbelief.”
Camila Torres, an English major, emphasized that she thinks Trump can ensure the safety of the country.
“I like the laws that he will put into this country, for security and his handling of negotiations, crime, especially stealing, is a problem, and I think he would be able to change that,” Torres said.
Student Alex Li had only one priority for the day – to ensure he would ace an upcoming exam. If he failed the exam, he said, it would affect the direction of his life more than the election. “I care more about failing my linear test than the presidential election,” Li said.
