The Laney College women’s basketball team, despite a horrendous home outing against Contra Costa College on Feb. 4, remains very much in the hunt for a Bay Valley Conference championship as the
regular season draws to a close.
At press time, the Eagles have a 10–3 record in the BVC (16–9 overall) and are one game behind leader Solano College (11–2, 18–7).
Laney plays at Solano in Fairfield on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in its final regular-season game. The Eagles defeated the Falcons, 77–68, on Jan. 20 at home. If the Eagles defeat Solano and the BVC ends in a tie, Laney would win the tiebreaker.
The Eagles defeated visiting Napa Valley College 77–63 on Feb. 6, rebounding from a 90–62 thumping at the hands of visiting Contra Costa College on Feb. 4, a team they defeated earlier in the season.
Robnesha Brigham and Emani Gardener led a balanced scoring effort against Napa, each scoring 13 points.
Rose Marcelino and Krystal each added 12 points as the Eagles avenged an earlier loss to the 49ers.
Against Contra Costa, Laney was down by just three points at the half, 39–36, before collapsing in the last 20 minutes. The Eagles were outscored 51–26 in the last 20 minutes and repeatedly sent
the Comets to the foul line, where they converted 35 of 45 attempts.
Laney hit just 14 of 21 free throws and were out-scored by 21 points on the charity stripe.
The Eagles played at Merritt College on Feb. 11 and end the regular-season season with a home game against the College of Marin on Friday, Feb. 13. Game time is 6 p.m.
The BVC season ends on Wednesday, Feb. 18 (Laney has a bye), so by the end of next week the Eagles will find out if they stay home or make the playoffs for the seventh straight year.
Bet on the latter.
