Two Laney College Media Communications Department students received scholarships from the Northern California Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences on Oct. 24 in San Francisco.
Laney student Michael Cotton received the $2,000 Sheldon “Shelly” Fay Videography Scholarship, and fellow student Ryan “Remo” Fioroni was awarded the $3,000 Steve Davis Memorial Under-Graduate Overall Excellence Scholarship, underwritten by George Lang of “The Big Picture.”
“We are very proud of the achievement of our students, said PCCD Chancellor Jowel C. Laguerre. “I want to thank the NATAS for its recognition of our deserving students.”
Other winners this year include students from Stanford and Sacramento State.
NATAS trustee Steve Shlisky — also a producer at KTVU Channel 2 and Media Communications professor at Laney College — noted that “the quality and aesthetics of the students’ submissions is closer and closer each year to the work of professional journalists. That’s a real tribute to the excellent media education going on at our local colleges.”
