Editor — Regarding Ines Colon’s article (Tower, Sept. 11) on B-quad air quality, my concern was this: after 10 minutes in B-256, my throat was constricting and students were rubbing their eyes.
With the extraordinary teamwork of Vice President Lilia Celhay and Dean Chuen Chan, I was able to secure a place to resume class. Not one to let a little “cement dust” get in my way, I tried again to teach in the room until my student took out her inhaler.
The room was not acceptable to teach in. I gave the pollutants the moniker “cement dust”; when I heard there would be testing, I asked (Peralta District Director of Risk Management) Gregory Valentine to tell me what would be tested. I was told “dust.”
As anyone concerned with air quality in West Oakland knows, there are quite a variety of deadly pollutants that not only cause cancer but also inflame asthma.
I strongly urge Colon to continue to research the air quality focusing on our border with I-880. Air pollutants combine exacerbating toxicity.
