The Laney College football season ended with a thud in a 30–20 loss to host College of San Mateo in the Bothman Bulldog Bowl on Nov. 22.
Actually, it was more like a sack than a thud.
Eagles quarterbacks Kurt Palandech and Garrett Anderson were harassed unmercifully, getting sacked 10 times for a loss of 67 yards. The lost yards, unlike the NFL, are subtracted from a team’s rushing total, so the Eagles finished with a minus-45 yards rushing and 121 yards of total offense.
But with all that went wrong for Laney (6–5), the Eagles were still only down 21–20 with 10:57 left to play and still had a chance to pull out an improbable victory.
But CSM clinched the victory with a 9-play, 76-yard drive with 1:06 left to salt the game away and send the Eagles to their second straight loss.
Yet there were some good things to take away from this game. Despite the yardage disparity, Laney actually led 7–0 at the half when CSM quarterback Jeremy Cannon lost 17 yards and fumbled. Laney defensive back Demareyeh Lane grabbed the fumble and ran 27 yards for a touchdown with 1:05 left in the first half.
But the incessant Bulldogs offense (412 total yards) wore down the stout Laney defense and CSM took a 21–7 lead with 13:17 left in the third quarter.
At that point, the Bulldogs had a 365–18 edge in total yards, but the Eagles scored twice in less than two minutes to pull within 21–20 with just under 11 minutes left.
Palandech finally got loose from the CSM rush and threw a 58-yard pass to Leroy Taylor, who was dragged down at the Bulldogs’ 17. On the next play Palandech again found Taylor with a pass, this one good for 17 yards and a touchdown. Joshua Sowho kicked the PAT and the score was 21–14 with 12:51 left.
The Bulldogs got the ball back but were forced to punt. Michael Adams broke through and blocked the kick, which Ryan Gordon grabbed and returned it 9 yards for a score with 10:57 left. Laney was down 21–20 as the PAT kick was missed.
CSM sacked Laney quarterback Garrett Anderson in his own zone for a safety with 4:32 left and Laney missed a fourth-down play with 3:09 left in the game. CSM drove 76 yards for the clinching touchdown and that was it for the Eagles.
