Berkeley City College (BCC) is asking students to vote for its new mascot from a selection of three student designs. Voting ends Jan. 8.
The finalist designs are an owl modeled after BCC’s logo by Yunha Kim, a penguin with a bucket hat by Anna Phu, and a butterfly matching the logo for the college’s Undocumented Community Resource Center by Nash Gutierrez.
The winning artist will help “guide the final design of the mascot” according to an email sent out Monday, which included a link to the survey.
The coyote had previously been announced as a mascot finalist, but the college later ruled it “due to its negative associations with our undocumented community,” according to the email.
The selected mascot will be revealed during the Faculty Flex Day on Jan. 17, according to BCC’s Classified Senate President and Public Information Officer Thomas Rizza. BCC leaders will then work with one of Peralta’s graphic design specialists, Marcus Creel, to create a final design.
The survey was “shared with Berkeley City College students, faculty, staff, and administrators” according to Rizza, though the survey itself does not limit votes to only BCC students.
Rizza shared his excitement for this project.
“We think it’s gonna be so helpful in terms of cementing our identity as a college, in getting our name out, and having really cool graphics to go along with our message here,” Rizza said.
