One week after a district-wide town hall meeting on the state of Peralta Community College District’s budget crisis, an upcoming board agenda item gives way to more information on a “reduction in force” at PCCD.
The district will hold a public hearing at the PCCD Board of Trustees meeting Tuesday on the proposed elimination of 68 positions, 24 of which are vacant and not currently staffed.
The goal of the hearing, per the meeting agenda, is to “solicit public input on this planned reduction of force.”
Agenda item 5.2 goes on to explain that cutting certain positions is the “only fiscally viable response” to address the budget deficit.
The meeting agenda includes a table that hints at how many positions could be on the chopping block for classified professionals, confidential employees, faculty and administrators.
Administrative positions account for 20 of the positions that could be eliminated — a 27% reduction. Classified employees account for 33 positions, or an 8% reduction in workforce.
It is unclear from the posted information how many of those positions in each category are among the 44 non-vacant positions.
The Citizen reached out to Mark Johnson, PCCD’s Executive Director for Marketing, Communications and Public Relations to understand what the next steps for the district would be after the hearing, but did not hear back by publication time.
The board will vote on the reductions at their Feb. 25 meeting, the agenda item states.
Tuesday’s meeting will begin at 6 p.m. in the district board room, and public comment will be accepted in person.
