Lylah Schmedel-Permanna is a Bay Area local and Managing Editor of The Citizen, where she typically covers investigative stories within the Peralta Community College District. She is a fellow for the CalMatters College Journalism Network focusing on California higher education. Lylah is a returning student to the community college system after years of working in civil rights law and attaining her B.A. in Cultural Anthropology from UC Davis. She is most passionate about uplifting the diverse voices of her hometown and holding local leaders accountable to their constituents. Lylah’s work has been recognized by the Society of Professional Journalists and the Student Press Law Center.

The American Straight A Academy helped students in China receive transfer degrees from the Peralta Community College District without paying international tuition or setting foot in California. The for-profit company, registered in Dallas, Texas, has not disclosed how much students pay for the experience.
