With class at 11–12:50 on Wednesdays Maricruz Martinez usually misses out on mid-day campus events. “Timing is definitely problematic.” When class ended early Sept. 24, Martinez didn’t expect to find club rush taking place on the quad. “I just followed the music.”

Club Affairs Officer Jessica Hargrove of the Associated Students of Laney College (ASLC) organized the two-day event on Sept. 23 and 24. Club rush featured Architecture Club, Chess Club, Mental Health Club, International Club, Tennis Club, Identity Club, Brown Alliance of Students Taking Action (BASTA), Black Student Union (BSU), Associated Students of Asian and Pacific Islanders (ASAPI), and more.

Martinez had already been visited by BASTA representatives (also ASLC Senators) Crystal Perez and Miguel Avila in an introduction to Chicano/Latin studies class. “They passed around a sign-up sheet but I hadn’t heard anything since.”

Upon approaching the quad, Martinez noted how empty campus felt compared to usual. “I didn’t know what was going on. None of the tables had signs and I didn’t see students approaching tables.” Martinez recognized the colorful paper art decorating the BASTA table and decided to sign up again.

If students missed their first opportunity (or like Martinez, want to sign-up again) another opportunity to check out clubs on campus isn’t far away. A second two-day club rush will be taking place in October, date to be determined. Students with questions regarding clubs don’t have to wait.
