Oakland – On Thursday, the last physical bookstore at the Peralta Community College District will move to a “virtual format” for summer, reopening in a new location with a new vendor beginning Fall 2026.
According to Laney’s Interim President Becky Opsata, longtime district vendor Follett Higher Education will host the college’s bookstore completely online for the summer. In the Fall, the bookstore will reopen across campus in the A building.
Opsata wrote in an email to The Citizen that her office would “contact all summer faculty and encourage them to reach out to enrolled students in their classes before the term starts,” to ensure Laney students have enough time to place an order for their course materials before classes are in session.
Peralta’s other three colleges closed their physical bookstores permanently in February 2025. At a March 4 District Academic Senate meeting, Deputy Chancellor Greg Nelson cited high commission rates from Follett and monthly financial losses to keep the bookstores open as the reason for switching vendors.
The district’s Board of Trustees approved a Master Agreement with Texas-based company BibliU in April, which manages stores for higher education institutions. The company will replace Follett as the bookstore vendor for the district. According to the agreement, BibliU will provide “all management, labor, equipment, goods, and supplies necessary to operate professional in-person and online stores.”
According to BibliU’s website, they partner with over 150 academic institutions to supply e-textbooks, digital learning materials, and online course materials throughout the District.
