The eclectic sounds of local Bay Area bands converged at Neck of the Woods in San Francisco to perform in the Mentality Flow Showcase. The performers ranged in genre from post-punk to hip-hop to R and B. The showcase featured the collective sounds of SpaceRawk, Yaeknows, Kare Collective, and JC & Suntori Band ft. Nicole Rebosura.
Mentality Flow came into existence when Kayla de Guzman was inspired by the music showcases, local art shows and open mics based in New York. Seeing a void in the local Bay Area scene, de Guzman launched Mentality Flow’s first showcase in Nov. 2015 at the Red Victorian, a San Francisco hostel and event venue, and then moved to do shows at SoMa’s StrEatfood on 11th Street in San Francisco. After taking a year-long break, Mentality Flow began booking showcases at Neck of the Woods.
The vision for Mentality Flow’s future, according to de Guzman, is to have a YouTube channel, merchandise, more art shows in different cities, and a music festival. She said, “We wanted to create a showcase of not just rappers but a mix of spoken word, singers, instrumental musicians and bands.”
