The ASLC appointed a new publicity commissioner and discussed a variety of upcoming events at its Oct. 16 meeting.
Miguel Avila, a senator in the ASLC, was appointed by President Carl Oliver to be voted into the role of publicity commissioner. The table opened up for discussion and council members began to talk about the importance of the position and voice their opinions on whether Avila was fit for the job.
The publicity commissioner would work with the Team Laney Marketing Group. It is the responsibility of the Publicity Commissioner to get the word out to students about upcoming events and any information provided by the ASLC.
After the council members shared how they felt about Avila for the position, it was his turn to persuade the council why he nominated himself for the position.
Avila seemed determined and confident in himself as he explained why he would be a good Publicity Commissioner. His determined attitude and reassurance that he was capable of having the responsibility that the job demands had a positive effect on the undecided council members. When he was finished with his speech he had persuaded the other members to vote him into the position.
>Oliver discussed his plans to hold a Thanksgiving Day event in the Student Center. Oliver had previously tried to have this event last year. The event would be for around 200 students. For those who are less fortunate or may not have a place to have a Thanksgiving dinner. It is also gives the opportunity for foreign exchange students to learn about the Thanksgiving tradition and experience the holiday.
The event was accepted by the entire council and thought to be a great idea for the students. However, there were a few council members who raised questions with the name of the event.
Discussion about the negative connotation of the history of the holiday ensued and a few of the council members stressed that the event should incorporate a focus on Native American history. When the name of the event was brought into question and asked to be changed, a few of the council members thought that the name should remain Thanksgiving to follow tradition.
The council brainstormed and agreed to vote on changing the name of the event to Laney Giving Day instead of Thanksgiving. The name was voted on and was passed. Oliver took responsibility to be in charge of the committee for the event and will provide more details about Laney Giving Day in the upcoming weeks.
>>The Homecoming committee requested $800 of additional funding for hiring a DJ and for other accommodations for the Student Center. The Homecoming Committee is still looking for a reasonably priced option for musical entertainment for the Homecoming dance following the football game.
The ASLC members voted and granted the committee the additional funding. There was discussion of making the dance a plus-one event so that students may bring a guest with them. The dance will begin at 10 p.m. in the Student Center following the football game.
