Here at the Laney Tower, we do our best to reflect the comings and goings of not only the Peralta Colleges, but also the East Bay community at large. Our audience isn’t the tech-bros gentrifying the area to work for a start-up, or the Peralta administration.
Rather, our audience is: the grandmothers getting their degrees in ethnic studies; the teenagers getting their certificates in cosmetology; the musicians taking design and music video production classes to get their band back off the ground; the eco-friendly students who are learning how build better, more sustainable buildings; the low-income students with part-time jobs, working towards degrees or transfers to four-year schools.
This Newspaper Is For You
We’re writing this letter to you to apologize for letting you down.
Maybe we’ve been covering stories you’re just not interested in. Maybe we’ve been covering too many stories at Laney College, and not enough at College of Alameda.
Maybe you think our Word on the Quad isn’t serious enough — or that it’s too serious.
Maybe you think our front page looks dull, that we don’t cover women’s sports enough, or that our arts reviews haven’t been too hot.
Or maybe you can’t believe we haven’t written about the district-wide budget freeze, or the hiring of this or that new administrator. (If this describes you, make sure you read our next issue, available on April 21).
If you think any of these things, or something we haven’t named: come to us.
Your Newspaper Needs You
This is your newspaper, so it should reflect your needs.
Write to us; send in letters to the Editor to laneytower(at)peralta.edu.
Heck, you can even call us at (510) 464–3460.
(Or come write or photograph for us!)
But most importantly, tell us in person: come to our public forum on April 13 at 11 AM in the Laney Tower office: G-233 on the Laney College campus.
Hopefully, it will be the first of many — a dedicated time where our staff listens to what you want from and what you think about the Laney Tower.
So that next time you pick up one of our issues, you’ll know: we’ve got you covered.
